Characteristics:

Personality: John is a generally friendly person, though he does have a bit of a temper. When calm, he takes his time and analyzes situations before rushing in. When frustrated, he does have a tendency to hit things. Thus, he can be flustered. Outside the ring, John is a loyal and funny friend, and if you get to know him well enough he can be very funny. He does flirt, but he’s usually sharp enough to realize when someone doesn’t want his attention. His experience being bullied as a student left him with little tolerance for bullies now. Trash talk is a big pet peeve, especially if he’s not doing well in a match. That will frustrate John very quickly.

Background:
Born and raised in Brooklyn, John was always an athletic kid. He loved basketball and wrestling. However, when John came out as a high school freshman, he faced intense bullying and stigma. Sports were one of his main outlets, but when his teammates started to bully him as well, John grew bitter. He felt that he had to train harder and appear tougher than any of his would-be tormentors, if only to prove that their bullying would not hold him back. Moreover, despite his generally kind nature, he got into a number of altercations with high school bullies.

His main refuge was a professional wrestling gym he trained at after school. John started working at a gym as his first job, and soon he was training there almost every afternoon. He fell in love with the sport and found supportive mentors there who helped him get through High School and channel his frustration in a disciplined way.

Despite his love for the sport, John left the gym he was studying at and enlisted in the US Navy. He simply could not afford college, and the GI benefits were alluring to someone his age. However, there was more to it then that. There was also a form of respectability politics at play. Thinking back on it, John realized this was more about showing his bullies that he was masculine enough. It was as if he thought the prestige of military service would be a shield from his tormentors. In doing so, he’d let them win. He’d gone off to a career he disliked and gave up one he loved.

John did not have a fond experience in the fleet. He was a fine sailor and excelled in his Gunner’s Mate rating, but he found the environment toxic and filled with the same types of aggressive bullies he’d been trying to avoid. Four years later, John left the service after his enlistment was up and never looked back. He’d had enough of trying to prove his worth to his tormentors—instead he went back to what he loved. By the time John was half way through college, he was a well-established indie pro-wrestler.

After a few years of building his career, John had developed a reputation. First, he was known as a well-trained and particularly strong fighter—certainly someone not to be bullied. Second, he also had a reputation for being a bit of a flirt with receptive opponents. He also had a habit of bringing interested opponents home for some private fights. This, of course, was something which caught the attention of recruiters for The Island. John aware that such erotic leagues did exist, and he decided to throw caution into the wind and give it a try.
